Alun Horgan

Alun Horgan

Alun has been playing percussion since he was 9 years old. He was encouraged to join Treherbert Silver Band and enjoyed much success with the band as they progressed through the sections. He was also a member of Treorchy Comprehensive School Band under the direction of Mr Ieuan Morgan MBE.

Alun attended all of the orchestral courses at Ogmore with the Four Counties Youth Orchestra and now occasionally returns to Ogmore as a member of staff. In 2002 Alun graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music with a B.Mus. (hons) degree and then studied Performance for a year with Chris Stock, percussion Tutor at the College. During this time Alun also took up peripatetic work in Comprehensive Schools in the Rhondda and Merthyr area, as well as training the percussion section of the Cardiff County Vale of Glamorgan High Schools orchestra. He has also been a tutor on the International Brass Band Summer School held in Swansea. In September 2003 he attended UWIC to study for a Post Graduate Certificate in Secondary Education. A month before starting this course he was contacted by Dr. Robert Childs offering him the post of Principal Percussionist with the Buy as you View Band. During his time with the band he has performed in many high profile concerts and competitions across Europe.

In September 2004 Alun was appointed Teacher in charge of Music at Tonypandy Community College. However keen to forward his teaching career he moved to take up a teaching post at Whitchurch High School in September 2005. As well as his day to day duties as a music teacher, he is also responsible for directing the lower school Orchestra and Wind Band which take part in regular concerts held in the school and the community. Following his arrival at WHS he added a percussion ensemble and samba group to the extra curricular activities.

Since commencing his studies at the RWCMD Alun has lived in Cardiff with his girlfriend Suzanne who is also a music teacher at The Ridings High School, Bristol. They have recently purchased a home together in Rogerstone and are looking forward to many Traffic Jams on the M4.
