Andrew Crawford - First Horn

Andrew Crawford I was born in Liverpool in 1960 and moved to Newtownabbey in 1966.

I started singing in Mosley Primary School and a church choir and continued singing when I started secondary education at Rathcoole Secondary School. I sang in a few school musicals - Joseph, Westside Story and the Wizard of Oz.

While in first form I started to play the violin under the tuition of Mrs Eileen Cooper from Whiteabbey and had achieved Grades I to VIII by the time I finished my 'A' levels.

I lost interest in music for a number of years but was invited to a concert by the Reid Memorial Band from Belfast in 1981, where I was persuaded to try and the baritone. I held the position of 1st Baritone for 5 years under the direction of Mr J Kitchen.

In 1986 I heard the Third Carrickfergus Silver Band play in the Belfast Music Festival when they won with a composition called Oceans. I asked to join the band and was given the position of 1st Baritone. After a few years I moved to Solo Horn for a period of 5 to 6 years, then moved back on to 1st Baritone, and in January 2014 I took the position of First Horn.

Outside of the band I work as a transport controller for DSV Road Ltd and have been employed in the transport industry all my working life.
