Colin Watson - Principal Percussion
I joined the band in 1981 at the age of 12 and since then I have worked my way up to the position of principal of my section, a position I am very proud to hold. I am married to Victoria, and have 2 sons Oliver and Euan. Oliver is now playing Trombone in the junior band, and Euan has just recently started to play Baritone, although he also wants to play drums as well, so it seems I will have some coaching to do in my spare time!
Throughout my time in the band I have enjoyed many high points. One of my proudest and most privileged moments was representing Northern Ireland in Holland at the Europeans in Groningen in 2005. I have also had the honour of being awarded Percussionist of the Year after playing a fantastic piece called ‘Oceans’ with the band.
When I am not playing or rehearsing with the band, I work for Northern Ireland Railways as a Driver Training Assessor at the Training Centre in Belfast; I started in the railway as a porter after leaving secondary school, and have worked my way up through the company since then.
