The band is devastated to report the sudden passing on Tuesday morning of our long term member John (JG) Gilbert. An incredibly gifted musician, blessed with the most gorgeous sound imaginable, regardless of which instrument he played, he will be sadly missed by all in the Third Carrick family. Not only was he our current 2nd Baritone player but he was also our resident brass band anorak, keeping everyone informed before even Iwan Fox knew what was happening in the Brass Band World. Very giving of his time and experience to anyone willing to listen.
Outside of band he was a brilliant Engineer, talented golfer and an expert on horse and greyhound racing (having been involved in training when younger). Always great company and first to the bar to get a round in. Perhaps how he will be remembered most however, is for that wicked sense of humour always ready with a joke and never taking life too seriously despite the obvious health challenges in his life.
Clearly gone but not forgotten. Rest easy mate, taken way too soon. Our thoughts are especially with Denise, Jonathan, Laura, Matthew and the rest of the Gilbert clan at this very difficult time as he was a very proud husband, father and grandfather and loved his family dearly.
His funeral will take place on Sunday 20th July at 2:00 pm in Victoria Evangelical Hall, Victoria Road, Carrickfergus.
