The recent BRASSFEST weekend in Enniskillen proved to be a highly successful and memorable occasion for Third Carrick, with the band securing an excellent third place following a strong performance.
Following a number of recent internal moves within the band, there was considerable satisfaction with both the performance and the result. The band received a number of positive comments, together with constructive feedback from both adjudicators, providing valuable points for consideration and development as preparations continue for the months ahead.
A particular highlight was Sophie Hueston’s vocal solo, which earned her a special award. The band would like to congratulate Sophie on this achievement and wish her every success as she begins her studies in singing at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.
The BRASSFEST result provides the band with renewed confidence as it looks ahead to the National Championships in October, with considerable enthusiasm for what can be achieved.
The band was also pleased to welcome Andy McQuiggan, Billy Gilmore and Kevin Teers as guests for the day and thanks them for their support.
Celebrating the Third Carrick Family
Following the performance, members took the opportunity to gather for a long-overdue band photograph before heading to Franco’s for an excellent Italian lunch. The lunch provided an ideal opportunity to recognise the remarkable stability, commitment and longevity that have been such an important part of the Third Carrick family.
Service awards were presented to members who have been associated with the band for more than 30, 40 and 50 years. Collectively, these awards represent an extraordinary 540-plus years of service from just 13 individuals.
Congratulations go to:
• 30+ years: Tim, Will and Claire
• 40+ years: Ruth, Hoppy, Colin, Pete and Roy
• 50+ years: Hazel, JG, Morris and Allan
• Lifetime Achievement Award: Desy
Such exceptional long-term commitment is a remarkable testament to the strength of the Third Carrick family and to the generations of musicians and supporters who have contributed to the band throughout its history.
The occasion also provided an opportunity to thank Vicky for her help and support throughout the year in her role as the band’s resident compere.
Sophie was also presented with the Peter Arthurs Bursary, which will assist towards her college expenses.
There were further celebrations as the band congratulated newlyweds Roy and Denise, who very kindly invited the band to their honeymoon 🙂 !
The celebrations continued with the marking of Robert Frost’s 80th birthday, with another spectacular creation from Steph at Ohhcrumz providing the icing on the cake.
Supporting the Next Generation
After a quick change, attention turned to supporting the band’s younger members as they represented the NYBBNI. Well done to Sophie, Erika, Christy and Martha for their efforts, and to Jacklin, who was also involved as one of their tutors. It is particularly encouraging to see the next generation of musicians developing their skills and representing the band so positively.
A Memorable Weekend in Enniskillen
The evening was spent celebrating in Enniskillen before members reconvened on Sunday morning for a buffet breakfast at The Enniskillen Hotel, bringing a memorable weekend to a close.
The weekend was a fitting reminder of the pride the band takes in its history, while also highlighting the exciting opportunities that lie ahead. With a number of developments to look forward to, there is a strong sense of optimism about the future of Third Carrick.
Dare to Dream!
Particular thanks must go to Keith Anderson, whose first year conducting the band has been characterised by an exceptional work ethic, assured leadership and inspirational direction. His contribution has played an important role in the band’s continued development, and the future looks very bright indeed.
Looking Ahead
Congratulations to everyone who competed at BRASSFEST, together with all of the prize winners across the various sections.
A special acknowledgement is due to Stephen Crooks and his team for organising such a successful contest. BRASSFEST has proved to be a welcome and valuable addition to the banding calendar and provided the perfect setting for an enjoyable and successful weekend.
The band’s attention now turns to The Marketplace Theatre in Armagh for the NIBA Championships, before the focus shifts towards the busy Christmas schedule and the opportunity to get out and about and perform for our supporters and wider public.
It was an outstanding weekend for Third Carrick, combining musical achievement, the celebration of remarkable long-term service and a strong focus on the next generation.
